Research Associate/Assistant – Cognitive Neuroscience Data Scientist

The Laboratory of Computations of Cognition & Control (C3) at the International Center for Primate Brain Research (ICPBR) of the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligent Technology (CEBSIT) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is seeking to hire TWO highly motivated Research Assistants (RA), with strong background in data science and analytics.

In this role, you will support the technical development and data analytics pipeline of a brand-new lab with the mission to discover the building blocks of cognition and their biomarkers from rich multimodal behavioral and neural data! You will also have the unique opportunity to be exposed to the international research atmosphere of the ICPBR and of the Lab at Songjiang District of Shanghai.

This full-time position is ideal for recent college graduates or soon-to-be graduates, willing to make a 3-year commitment to advance their research profile. This position can serve as a great stepping stone to graduate school and industry jobs in neurotech and data science. The ideal candidate is someone who feels excitement for the lab’s mission and is curious and self-driven. He/She will have experience in handling complex data and can help analyze and interpret rich multimodal datasets. He/She is also an excellent communicator and will work effectively in a team to build a state-of-the-art experimental suite. And most importantly, the ideal candidate will thrive in this position and make the best of his/her abilities!

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing and interpreting multi-dimensional neural activity at various spatial scales, from EEG down to single neurons
  • Analyzing motor behavior (sampled by eye-tracker, cameras, touch screen) and other physiological markers of cognitive state (such as pupil diameter, heart rate, blink rate)
  • Collaborate with vendors and engineers to develop and assemble computer and back-end systems to support behavioral and high-density electrophysiological recordings at high temporal resolution
  • Programing experimental tasks with closed-loop control
  • Applying creative techniques in data visualization to illustrate complex data
  • Presenting results and findings in regular lab meetings, departmental meetings, and conferences

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Loves to work with data! And loves to solve problems!
  • Excellent programming skills in MATLAB and Python
  • A working knowledge of Machine Learning and Data Science tools (e.g., dimensionality reduction, Clustering, Linear Regression, Bayesian Statistics) is highly valued!
  • Experience with structuring, cleaning, and extracting insights from complex datasets
  • Has a basic knowledge of analyzing and interpreting time-series data
  • Proficiency in English (written and oral)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Already has, or will have obtained by the end of the 2025 academic year, Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Engineering / Neuroscience / Psychology, or a related field with a strong computational background
  • Experience with Psychophysics Toolbox or similar psychology platforms is an asset!
  • Expertise with Git and collaborative code reviews for effective version control and sharing
  • Experience implementing different Machine Learning algorithms and comparing performance
  • Experience working with Large Language Models to enhance operations
